What our past student said about learning at AAOWT

In my case there has been no end of encouragement and care given in both study and personal abilities – for me they went hand in hand. As an adult learner and not having studied for a very long time I never felt intimidated by any staff member nor made to feel uncomfortable for any lack of knowledge or question asked.

My Time at AAOWT – A Reflective Journal

AAOWT was my home of learning for 5 years. My journey began in 2011 when I went for an interview at AAOWT to enrol in a Diploma of Remedial Massage course. During that time not only have I learned a few modalities in natural therapies but have also learned about myself and my capabilities.

Encouraged by Tricia to enrol in both a Diploma in Reflexology as well as a Diploma of Remedial Massage, my full-time course of study was set for at least the next 2 years, so I thought! At the time of enrolment, I was being divorced as I had that insidious disease called Depression, suffering through menopause, and was estranged from my teenage children. Yes, I was a bit of a mess. However, I knew that I needed to reinvent myself as I had been a stay-at-home-mum for 20years. I had always loved giving massages. Fortunately for me Tricia saw the potential in me and I in turn was able to assure her I was stable enough to do the course and not waste her time or my money.

Although I never doubted my intelligence to complete the course, my ability to apply myself to the writing up of assignments was debatable going by my past study experiences. During 2012 through a series of events it was proven through the Nuclear Medicine Department of Hollywood Private Hospital that I had ADHD. This discovery lifted me up immensely as it explained behaviours that had existed for me all of my life. ADHD also gives one the propensity for depression. The unaddressed Poste Natal depression I had experienced with all three of my children began to make sense. None-the-less my specialist at the time continued prescribing anti-depressants without addressing the ADHD. Therefore, there was no change in my ability to get the work done. Due to this condition I was always given extra time without question.

The positive environment of AAOWT with its qualified instructors and like-minded students of natural therapies was conducive to me learning a lot about nutrition. I immersed myself in finding out what I could include in my life to improve the status quo of my mind and therefore my outlook on life. Mostly the results, apart from the internet, came from what I was studying, my lecturers and peers. As time went on I included Aromatherapy and Muscular Skeletal Therapy courses into my repertoire. In my case there has been no end of encouragement and care given in both study and personal abilities – for me they went hand in hand. As an adult learner and not having studied for a very long time I never felt intimidated by any staff member nor made to feel uncomfortable for any lack of knowledge or question asked.

In essence, while AAOWT has been a family and safe haven for me they have also been very professional, have a very high standard of teaching and expect a high standard in return from their students. The quality of what I have learned and now appreciate became evident when moving interstate and receiving treatments from other qualified therapists – I was disappointed. I believe AAOWT produce highly qualified practitioners and have no hesitation in recommending AAOWT to anyone who desires quality training and support in any course offered by AAOWT.
