What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils from plant sources, as therapeutic agents to seek to influence,  change or modify, mind body or spirit, physiology or mood. Aromatherapy is an industry with varying forms. Based on the training of the individual and the way in which essential oils are used, there are four clearly definable branches of aromatherapy. These include aesthetic aromatherapy practised by beauty therapists, holistic aromatherapy practised by aromatherapists; psychoaromatherapy practised by aromachologists; and aromatic medicine practised by medical practitioners and aromatologists. Clinical aromatherapists practise a combination of each of these branches of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy targets our sense of smell and touch. Aromatherapy is a natural and pleasurable way to restore vitality, to enhance our emotional wellbeing, and to stimulate rather than suppress the body’s immunity. Essential oils exhibit a wide range of therapeutic properties. They also act on the central nervous system. Some oils induce relaxation; some are stimulating, while others are balancing. Most stress-related problems can be successfully treated with aromatherapy and an enormous benefit can be gained by using essential oils for emotional well-being.

Essential oils can be integrated into everyday life and used in a variety of ways. They can be used in a vaporiser to create an enjoyable ambience, applied to the body through massage, added to the bath, used in the shower, blended in creams and vegetable oils to be applied to the skin, added to shampoos and conditioners for the hair, used as perfumes, used for basic first aid in the home, inhaled for respiratory problems, used to deter insects, used in general household cleaning, and for environmental fragrancing.  The Australasian Academy  of Wellness Therapies (AAOWT) is proud to offer Government accredited full and part-time courses for students of all ages and backgrounds to help improve job prospects. The course is designed in such a way that it allows those who have no prior knowledge of aromatherapy to use essential oils, safely and effectively o help themselves, family, friends and the public in general.

What is an aromatherapist?

AAOWT believes that the term aromatherapist is an appropriate term for anyone who is involved in the safe use and application of essential oils to the human body to restore and maintain good health. Since aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils which are derived from plants, anyone wishing to practise aromatherapy should have an understanding of the plants concerned and the composition and properties of their essential oils.A clinical aromatherapist is someone who has completed the required training in aromatherapy as well as other specialised areas of scientific knowledge and research, and expertise in theoretical and practical application.

A Clinical aromatherapist designs individual treatment programs, using pure essential oils to suit the clients’ personal needs. Blends of essential oils are applied to the body using specialised massage techniques, or prescribed as home treatments in a variety of applications such as inhalations, baths or compresses.

Why study aromatherapy?

The ever-expanding field of natural medicine is gaining world-wide popularity and acceptance as trends more towards the integration of both complementary and orthodox philosophies with emphasis on preventative therapies and healthy lifestyle education. There has always been a steady growth of interest in aromatherapy in as much that it is one of the most widely used complementary therapies in Australia today. An increasing number of excellent opportunities exist for well-trained Clinical aromatherapists.

Student contemplating a career in aromatherapy must be aware of the need to receive recognised training that will enable them to practise confidently, safely and professionally.

In order to practise aromatherapy, one should gain the knowledge and skills required to deliver an aromatherapy treatment safely and effectively whilst developing effective communication skills. This includes a knowledge of the health sciences, a knowledge of the chemistry and virtues of essential oils , and a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of several types of body massage.
